چکیده
California ground squirrel, a diurnal sciurid, show that large receptive fields and a strong direction selectivity are present in the middle lateral area (ML) and the lateral area (L), located laterally to V2 and V3. Direction selectivity was tested by presenting stimuli of varying dimensions, shapes and speeds at different locations in the visual field. Most cells in ML and L (84%) were direction selective, with a preference for fast speeds, indicating that these areas share a role in motion processing. Areas ML and L may be homologous to area MT or may represent a case of homoplasia. A directional anisotropy for motion towards the vertical meridian was found in ML and L cells, suggesting that these areas may be involved in detecting predators and other moving objects coming from the periphery, rather than in processing flow fields caused by forward locomotion, for which a centrifugal bias might be expected.

Effect of Norepinephrine depletion on induction of experience dependent plasticity in male rat barrel cortex
Introduction: Barrel cortex of rats is a part of somatosensory cortex, which receives information from facial whiskers. Vibrisectomy by sensory deprivation leads to some changes in the barrel cortex, which have been known as experience dependent plasticity. On the other hand, Norepinephrine (NE) and locus coeruleus, which is the main source of NE, influenced response properties of cortical bar...
متن کاملWeak orientation and direction selectivity in lateral geniculate nucleus representing central vision in the gray squirrel Sciurus carolinensis.
Classic studies of lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) and visual cortex (V1) in carnivores and primates have found that a majority of neurons in LGN exhibit a center-surround organization, while V1 neurons exhibit strong orientation selectivity and, in many species, direction selectivity. Recent work in the mouse and the monkey has discovered previously unknown classes of orientation- and directi...
متن کاملReceptive field properties of neurons in the squirrel striate cortex.
Functional organization of receptive fields of 192 neurons from the red squirrel striate cortex was studied. There were three functional types of units: non-selective, directionally selective, and orientationally selective. Non-selective neurons (16 percent) responded to stationary and even more vigorously to moving stimuli regardless of their orientation and direction of movement (with preferr...
متن کاملAfferent basis of visual response properties in area MT of the macaque. I. Effects of striate cortex removal.
The middle temporal area (MT) of the macaque monkey is a region of extrastriate cortex involved in the analysis of visual motion. MT receives strong projections from striate cortex and from area V2, which is dependent on striate for visual responsiveness. Accordingly, the visual properties of MT neurons have been thought to reflect the further processing of its input from striate cortex. We exa...
متن کاملFunctional degradation of extrastriate visual cortex in senescent rhesus monkeys.
The receptive field properties of striate cortical (V1) cells degrade in senescent macaque monkeys. We have now carried out extracellular single unit studies of the receptive field properties of cells in extrastriate visual cortex (area V2) in very old rhesus (Macaca mulatta) monkeys. This study provides evidence that both the orientation and direction selectivities of V2 cells in old monkeys d...
